SENSORY OVERLOAD: NATO IN CHICAGO - A RECAP BY BRIAN JAMES

The peak of the NATO protests in Chicago took place on Saturday, May 19th as crowds converged to the Grant Park area for a general assembly that kicked off around 10AM. It was clear from the start that every outcast faction from every sub-genre of society was present to voice their opinion on the issues they felt strongest about. Thousands arrived in droves armed with cardboard signs as their preferred weapon of choice.

I started my day observing the crowds shooting random photos of the wide array of characters in attendance. After being shut out of the grassy knoll by a self-proclaimed Black Bloc security member, SEE VIDEO HERE I relocated my position to the front of a stage where rejected Woodstock applicants showcased their talent to an unsuspecting crowd. I winced in pain as a tone deaf burn-out lead the crowd in a sing-along of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land.”  He added a few F-words into the chorus that I couldn't recall being part of the original recording.

I quickly needed something to distract my attention from the slaughter of Guthrie so I made a game of counting how many pairs of Nike shoes dressed the feet of protesters waving “DESTROY CAPITALISM” signs.  I came up with an un-official statistic that had three out of ten freedom fighters rockin Nike’s as they sipped on Mac Donald's beverages to cool their anti-imperialistic bodies from the day’s all-consuming heat.

Every which way you turned there was a demonstrator with a camera shoved in his face failing miserably at convincing an attractive reporter that the banks and corporations are destroying the world economy.  I couldn’t help but listen in as a self-elected spokesperson for "the cause" stumbled over their words resorting to the same types of vague, agenda-suiting rhetoric that they so strongly condemned the Christian right and Tea Baggers of being guilty of.

At some point my bladder began sending signals to my brain that a bathroom stop was in order. The porta-potties set up in Grant Park were far cleaner than the ones you’d find at an Kid Rock concert but with an equal amount of drug paraphernalia discarded into the abyss of the temporary shitters. As I held my breath and unloaded a stream of hot piss into the dry, black void of a plastic crapper, I noticed a punctured nitrous cartridge nestled up against a hippy turd and a half eaten apple. To the left of the turd was a dirty syringe that may or may not have been used to inject diabetes insulin. I’m thinking most likely not.

After the conclusion of a number of regurgitated speeches plagiarized straight from the pages of a Noam Chomsky essay, the crowds began to line up in formation led by the  Black Bloc Anarchist militia who succeeded in striking terror into the hearts of spectators with their black attire complete with face masks and gloves similar to the ones made famous by the O.J. Simpson trial.

The march officially kicked off sometime around 2PM and clogged the streets of Michigan Avenue heading south from Grant Park. My brother in arms for the march was former co-worker and Chicago native Jeremy Farmer who ended up suffering first degree burns to his forehead region from his lack of base tan. Audio and visual overload attacked from every direction during the march. Singing, dancing, yelling, screaming, laughing, cheering, drum beats on stained bongos and dirty buckets. Walking under the crumbling viaducts in tight packs of demonstrators became claustrophobic at one point when protesters used the acoustics of the concrete walls to raise the volume of their rants. The stink of Sage and patchouli blanketed the air like a tear gas attack and the pungent odor of the “skunky, funky, smelly, green shit” flowed from those who dared pull a hit off their glass blown one-hitters in the presence of a million angry cops.

Chants ranged in degree from the playful “YOU’RE SEXY! YOU’RE CUTE! TAKE OFF THE RIOT SUIT!” to the blatantly confrontational “WHAT DO WE WANT? DEAD COPS!” Some of the most frequently heard chants included the popular “WHOSE STREETS? OUR STREETS!” and the far more impressive “NO GUNS! NO TANKS! DESTROY THE FUCKING BANKS!” I did my best to kick off my own chant but it didn’t catch on – a tribute to the Stanly Kubrick war epic Full Metal Jacket “I DON’T KNOW WHAT I’VE BEEN TOLD, ESKIMO PUSSY IS MIGHTY COLD”

Some of the more important things I took away from marching in a protest is that you never wanna find yourself stuck behind a midget on crutches or a shirtless white man with back fat and tits bigger than a lactating orangutan. I learned that hippy aromas can be just as fatal as tear gas and that marching in sweaty sneakers without socks can cause blisters painful enough to result in fatality.

The repetitive chanting of liberal propaganda had taken its toll. By the end of the day I was convinced that I was a homosexual feminist, vegan environmentalist stricken with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome who was adamantly against blood for oil, fascism, and animal testing. I learned that meat is murder and that women don’t feel comfortable pulling out wedgies in a public setting.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has boasted that the $36.5 million used for NATO-related costs was not taken from taxpayers, instead raised by World Business Chicago. However, La Villita's Chicago Boxing Club board member Victor Rodriguez's is quick to question how the city can raise $36.5 million for the NATO conference but can't come up with $600 for a youth boxing club to keep kids off the streets after school? Or come up with money to keep mental health clinics open. Or to keep public schools appropriately funded with acceptable compensating for our teachers. Or for healthcare. Or for childcare. Or for homeless prevention and substance abuse care. Or for the simplest little things like filling those crater-sized potholes scattered throughout the city like silent landmines.

While protesters were catching batons to the face at the intersection of Cermak and Michigan, a documented $14 million dollars was being spent on wine and caviar parties for the 60 Heads of State attending the 2012 summit. If the protesters were successful at anything, it was in shutting down the city. Businesses ceased operation and some concerned owners went so far as to boarding up their windows. The term "ghost town" was thrown around like a 90 pound hipster to describe the atmosphere downtown and the millions in profits promised by the Mayor Emanuel has yet to materialize.

Everything remains the same. U.S. Troops are still dodging bullets in Afghanistan and you’re tax dollar is still paying for it. Our hands are still dripping with the blood of women and children and Mac Donald’s cheeseburgers still taste delicious. People are still uncomfortable with gay sex and Obama is still black. Be good to each other and have a nice day.

NOFX: HARDCORE – REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

What do you do when yer shitty little punk bands’ been around for  28 years, recorded 11 full-length studio albums, 15  EP’s, a countless number of 7-inches, and sold over 6 million of those records worldwide? You pretty much do whatever the fuck you want. NOFX has never signed to a major label. They tour wherever and whenever they want. They rarely do interviews. Their sound has been copied a million times over by a million forgotten bands.  And I still can’t figure out if Fat Mike is a drug addict or not.

Coming off the anti-success of their limited split 7-inch with The Spits, NOFX’s latest nugget is a 9 song EP simply and appropriately titled HARDCORE for its collection of 80’s hardcore tracks covering 80’s hardcore bands.  The EP is a blistering, sloppy mess worthy of review for the respects is pays to the good ol days of punk and hardcore.

The EP tops off at less than 8 minutes and burns through a fury of screaming chorus lines like “I’ll kick you in your fuckin face” and “Police Brutality”. The production value has been slightly downgraded for a vintage aesthetic and the album was originally intended to be released with no title, no artwork, and no track listing.

The dirty little secret of disenchanted purists and anarcho punx across the globe, NOFX has as many haters as it does fans.  That’s bound to happen when you’re the only punk bands around who can put out a release like this and still rake in the cash. Ya can’t hate em for that can ya?

Bands and songs covered

01 Agnostic Front - Friend Or Foe
02  Necros - IQ32
03 Urban Waste - Police Brutality
04 Social Unrest - Mental Breakdown
05 Battalion Of Saints - No More Lies
06 unknown
07 Sin 34 - Say We Suck
08 Rebel Truth - Child Hosts The Parasite
09 Stretch Marks - Professional Punk

For you record collecting enthusiasts, this release is available as a 7-inch on black, clear/ black, or white splatter vinyl. As a 10-inch on black and white split vinyl. Or as 12-inch picture disc of God knows what as the picture.

Release Date: 08/02/11
Label: Fat Wreck Chords

DSR79 - THE LENNY BRUCE EPISODE

DOPE SICK RADIO EPISODE 79 – TUESDAY, AUGUST 9 2011 – THE LENNY BRUCE EPISODE

Lenny Bruce was an entertainer far too ahead of his time. He rose from the underground and became a pioneer for free speech and social satire. He challenged his audience and authority alike and faced great consequence as a result.  His public commentary on war, politics, corruption, race issues, and sex rubbed all the wrong people in all the wrong ways. He was arrested on obscenity charges in practically every major city across America. It can be stated that Lenny Bruce pushed the boundaries of spoken word to the limits of the law. By the end of his career he couldn’t book a gig.

Lenny Bruce was a truth-seeker who built a career breaking down walls of multi-layered facades. He was haunted by the fact that the establishment had silenced him and spent the last years of his life trying to clear his name of the reputation that he was nothing more than a filthy comic. His last wishes would never fully be realized. His years of struggles with drug addiction would take his life in 1968 at the age of 40.

This is the Dope Sick Radio way of paying respects to an influential entertainer whose life and career were cut far too short. This is Lenny Bruce Episode. Enjoy.

MEDIA CONTROL - A SOCIAL STATEMENT

We are showered by thousands of images a day. Both still and moving. On television, in newspapers, on the internet, in movies, in video games, in magazines, billboard after billboard just driving down the street. Whether to serve the purpose of advertising or simply used to decorate the landscape, we are unaware of how strongly these images affect and shape our views of each other and ourselves. These images appear in our dreams at night and subconsciously influence what we buy, what we believe, and how we act. It can be overwhelming. So we just shut down and take it all in. We absorb it and it becomes part of us.

MEDIA CONTROL is a new visual project by Dope Sick Radio creator Brian James Bush. Very simple in nature. A social statement made up historical and contemporary images of the outlaw nature. Some soft. Some hard. Representing a culture bombarded by information and imagery. Stunning and desensitizing. A society as beautiful as it is ugly. Violent and sensitive. Constantly changing and ever-evolving. Captured forever and only...in a still image.

MORE THAN LIFE: LOVE LET ME GO – REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

Despite the many different genres and factions, hardcore has always been a style of music bred from emotion. Whether personal, political, social, or abstract, the music has always been executed with a primal sort of visceral instinct.

Every few years a band comes around that is able to capture more specific areas of feeling than others. One such band is the South West UK’s MORE THAN LIFE. Emerging onto the scene in 2007 with their self-produced EP aptly titled PRELUADE, More Than Life began carving out a style of music as furious as their passion to be heard. The band exhibits such a frantic style of instrumental onslaught that one will be amazed how they manage to tie it all back together just before the train wrecks.

Their latest release LOVE LET ME GO out on ANCHORS AWEIGH RECORDS finds the band completely primed for international admiration. The record as a whole evokes an experience of Greek tragedy in audio form, violent and catastrophic. Rising and falling, building steam and crashing to a halt. The vocal delivery is an agonizing compliment to the lyrical content of heartbreak and loss.

It’s hard to say why certain bands shine above others. There are many factors involved. If you were to base it solely on the music alone, which is not always the deciding factor of a bands success, More Than Life is a band to float to the top.

GIVE EM HELL: CALIFORNIA HARDCORE VOLUME 1 - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

It started in 2008 with the debut release of WE ARE THE WOLVES on WESTCOAST WORLDWIDE RECORDS. Since then, GIVE EM HELL have remained quietly dormant, gathering steam, waiting for the right moment to rise back up from the ashes to reclaim the throne. 2011 is that year.

Teaming back up once again with Westcoast Worldwide, Give Em Hell are back with their first of three EP’s scheduled for a 2011 release. CALIFORNIA HARDCORE: VOLUME 1 continues the progression of their Nor Cal style of street-level hardcore with a more mature and evolved message of strength, struggle, and unity. From the gut-wrenching surprise intro, to the final reflective fade-away, Volume 1 bounces back and forth between classic hardcore breakdowns, gang vocals, and an all out flurry of breakneck speed and aggression.

The bands re-emergence onto the scene with new drummer Craig Spinelli brings a fresh sense of vitality and urgency to an already brilliant line-up of hardcore acts on Mikey Hood’s WWR. Adapting to creative marketing techniques in the post-internet music industry, the band wanted to do something more significant than just releasing a full album of new material. Instead they opted to release three separate EP’s throughout the year. It’s the gift that keeps on giving for fans of Remembering Never, Reign Supreme, and Out For Revenge.

DSR76 - DARIN SPYDERDOG OF OUT FOR REVENGE

DOPE SICK RADIO EPISODE #76 – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12 2011 – W/ SPECIAL GUEST DARIN SPYDERDOG OF OUT FOR REVENGE

With their latest musical offering out now on Mikey Hood’s West Coast Worldwide Records, Out for Revenge continues to push forward against an oversaturated heap of Mall Metal and Fashion-core. We’ll be talkin with Darin Spyderdog of the Mesa, Arizona outfit about the current state of U.S. hardcore, the social climate of Arizona politics, and why the fuck there are 27 past members of the band. Have fun, listen hard, and keep comin back.

“Hardcore, based on what it is and its initial beginnings, is a protest style of music, a street-based protest style of music. And by not really doin that’s tuff I don’t think yer necessarily honoring what it is to be in a hardcore band. Yer kind of cheating yourself and the scene if you don’t have anything to say.” Darin Spyderdog via Dope Sick Radio

ADBUSTERS MAGAZINE - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

TAKE MORE RISKS - LIVE MORE DANGEROUSLY

Adbusters Magazine is a product of Adbusters Media Foundation, a non-for-profit, anti-consumerist organization founded in 1989 by Kalle Lasn and Bill Schmalz. Created and based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the foundation describes itself as "a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators, and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.

The organization and its bi-monthly print child focuses its attention on campaigns against consumerism, Capitalism,, war, poverty, globalization, environmental destruction, and other issues it sees as negatively affecting our societies and the world as a whole. Very often themed, each new issue challenges the intent of mass media and tests the limits of social thoughts, ideas, and opinions through a wide selection of contents and presentations.

Although cutting edge in its educated, liberalistic, and extreme leftist themes, I think the genius of Adbusters lies more in how the material is presented than the actual subject matter itself. Feature articles and mock advertisements are presented creatively through the use of stylized layouts, design work, photography, and non-linear writing styles. The magazine forces itself upon the reader with an aesthetic that's as intriguing as it is disturbing by using art and creative writing to question all aspects of life that have come to be accepted as "norm". You could very easily categorize Adbusters as an art magazine. Its a product that achieves an end result that all the aspects of quality art should achieve. It makes you think.

In recent years the magazine has come under fire for having a similar style and using the same techniques it rallies against to help push their own agendas and ideas, but its that very cynicism and contradictory attitude that attracts me to each new issue month after month. Theres a lot more goin on between the pages of its high gloss cover than meets the eye.

I have a lot of interests and its very hard for me to have a favorite "anything". But if you ever ask me what my favorite magazine is, Ill say Adbusters every time. High Praise. Check it out. - Brian James/ Dope Sick Radio

WHO CARES: THE DUANE PETERS STORY - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

Like it says in the intro, Duane Peters should be fuckin dead. And the fact that he's still standin is one of the biggest reasons hes become such a legend in the world of punkrock and skateboarding. Hes a survivor in the purest definition of the word. He doesnt stop. Hes never stopped. And he never will stop. Hes been there from the beginning and its arguable that hes the very reason punk rock and skateboarding ever became associated in the first place. Hes never played by any other rules than the ones hes set for himself and hes never known any other way of life.

The entertainment factor of WHO CARES is off the charts.  The story unfolds brilliantly through a goldmine worth of archived video footage intertwined with narration and interviews from the people who were there right alongside with him. This documentary is not only a definitive oral telling of the history and progression of skateboarding and punk rock, its the story of person whos always lived his life his own way no matter how twisted and fucked it got.

What make this doc so appealing is that the story itself is so universal. Whether you make it through life beaten, bruised, and broke; or alive, stronger, and smarter, the bottom line is that we all have our struggles and we all have to face our demons. And how you deal with your demons is what builds your character. In the case of Duane Peters, that motheruckers got more character than a Saturday morning cartoon. And hes got more charisma than a corner-store schizto preachin the end of the world scratched on an oil-stained piece-o-cardboard.

WHO CARES takes you on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows and at times its straight-up hard to fuckin watch. But in the end, I guarantee youll walk away feeling inspired and motivated and moved.

I cant tell you how many times Ive burned through this DVD and I still hit the pause bottom every time I leave the room to piss. I know whats comin next and I still dont wanna miss a thing.

CONVERGE: AXE TO FALL - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

2009 marks the 19th year of Converge's existence as a musical outfit. AXE TO FALL is the bands 7th official full-length release. This record is more punk than any punk record released this year. This record is harder-core than any other hardcore record release this year. The same comparison applies to the metal genre.

This band has never compromised its sound or aggression for any kind of mainstream acceptance and yet they've managed to achieve it in almost every subgenre and branch-off of it.

I cant even think straight right now. My senses are shredded. My nerves are frayed. I just had a panic attack and reverted back to some kind of primitive, animalistic way of thinking. God bless you Jake Bannon...you sick, scrawny tattooed motherfucker. Yer somethin different. Theres no doubt about that.

AXE TO FALL features a plethora of guest musicians including the likes of Steve Brodsky (Cave In), Adam McGrath (Cave In), John-Robert Connors (Cave In, Doomriders), Uffe Cederlund (Disfear, ex-Entombed), George Hirsch (Blacklisted), Brad Fickeisen (The Red Chord), Hamilton Jordan (Genghis Tron), Mookie Singerman (Genghis Tron), John Pettibone (Undertow, Himsa), Steve Von Till (Neurosis), and Sean Martin (ex-Hatebreed, Cage)

I just came to the realization that God can be explained through a mathematical equation and that his worth is set to value by a yearly audit. - Brian James/ Dope Sick Radio

DEAR LANDLORD: DREAM HOMES REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

I've read reviews that categorize DEAR LANDLORD as a pop punk band. And since I tend to shy way from most bands that fall into that category, I'm gonna refrain from labeling this band at all. What Ill do instead is paint a little picture. Imagine yourself being kicked in the stomach by an ex-girlfriend. You drop to the ground. And as your lying there curled up in a fetal position, she kneels down besides you. She tells you how sorry she is for doing what she just did. She caresses your face and wipes the beads of sweat off your forehead. As she leans in to offer what you expect to be a kiss, she head butts you straight in the fuckin nose. As you choke on the blood that pours down the back of your throat you can see out the corner of your eye, the image of a woman laughing. You close your eyes and when you wake up you realize that it was nothing more than a fucked up dream. Those are the exact moods this record accomplishes to evoke. A roller coaster ride of emotion throughout it's entirety.

On a more tangible note, DEAR LANDLORD definitely has that Midwest, sing-a-long, punkrock sound. Its a sound thats hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it. Whether theyve inherited that style intentionally or subconsciously is an answer the world may never come to know. What the world just might come to know however, is that DEAR LANDLORD is band with substance. Every song on this record is a pseudo-anthem filled with empowering and empathetic subject matter; accompanied by a complimentary selection of chorus lines, breakdown, and r-r-r-riffs.

The band is comprised of two-parts RIVETHEAD and two-parts COPYRIGHT. The first band being based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the latter hailing out of Carbondale, Illinois. Thus, that Midwest sound.

DREAM HOMES is the bands first full-length release and if they can keep their bond together long enough to write another record, Dear Landlord just might find themselves under a microscope of mainstream acceptance. And then I'll hate em.  Killer record folks. Check it. - Brian James/ Dope Sick Radio
