We are showered by thousands of images a day. Both still and moving. On television, in newspapers, on the internet, in movies, in video games, in magazines, billboard after billboard just driving down the street. Whether to serve the purpose of advertising or simply used to decorate the landscape, we are unaware of how strongly these images affect and shape our views of each other and ourselves. These images appear in our dreams at night and subconsciously influence what we buy, what we believe, and how we act. It can be overwhelming. So we just shut down and take it all in. We absorb it and it becomes part of us.

MEDIA CONTROL is a new visual project by Dope Sick Radio creator Brian James Bush. Very simple in nature. A social statement made up historical and contemporary images of the outlaw nature. Some soft. Some hard. Representing a culture bombarded by information and imagery. Stunning and desensitizing. A society as beautiful as it is ugly. Violent and sensitive. Constantly changing and ever-evolving. Captured forever and only...in a still image.

MORE THAN LIFE: LOVE LET ME GO – REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

Despite the many different genres and factions, hardcore has always been a style of music bred from emotion. Whether personal, political, social, or abstract, the music has always been executed with a primal sort of visceral instinct. 

Every few years a band comes around that is able to capture more specific areas of feeling than others. One such band is the South West UK’s MORE THAN LIFE. Emerging onto the scene in 2007 with their self-produced EP aptly titled PRELUADE, More Than Life began carving out a style of music as furious as their passion to be heard. The band exhibits such a frantic style of instrumental onslaught that one will be amazed how they manage to tie it all back together just before the train wrecks.

Their latest release LOVE LET ME GO out on ANCHORS AWEIGH RECORDS finds the band completely primed for international admiration. The record as a whole evokes an experience of Greek tragedy in audio form, violent and catastrophic. Rising and falling, building steam and crashing to a halt. The vocal delivery is an agonizing compliment to the lyrical content of heartbreak and loss.

It’s hard to say why certain bands shine above others. There are many factors involved. If you were to base it solely on the music alone, which is not always the deciding factor of a bands success, More Than Life is a band to float to the top.

It started in 2008 with the debut release of WE ARE THE WOLVES on WESTCOAST WORLDWIDE RECORDS. Since then, GIVE EM HELL have remained quietly dormant, gathering steam, waiting for the right moment to rise back up from the ashes to reclaim the throne. 2011 is that year.

Teaming back up once again with Westcoast Worldwide, Give Em Hell are back with their first of three EP’s scheduled for a 2011 release. CALIFORNIA HARDCORE: VOLUME 1 continues the progression of their Nor Cal style of street-level hardcore with a more mature and evolved message of strength, struggle, and unity. From the gut-wrenching surprise intro, to the final reflective fade-away, Volume 1 bounces back and forth between classic hardcore breakdowns, gang vocals, and an all out flurry of breakneck speed and aggression.

The bands re-emergence onto the scene with new drummer Craig Spinelli brings a fresh sense of vitality and urgency to an already brilliant line-up of hardcore acts on Mikey Hood’s WWR. Adapting to creative marketing techniques in the post-internet music industry, the band wanted to do something more significant than just releasing a full album of new material. Instead they opted to release three separate EP’s throughout the year. It’s the gift that keeps on giving for fans of Remembering Never, Reign Supreme, and Out For Revenge.

Adbusters Magazine is a product of Adbusters Media Foundation, a non-for-profit, anti-consumerist organization founded in 1989 by Kalle Lasn and Bill Schmalz. Created and based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the foundation describes itself as "a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators, and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.

The organization and its bi-monthly print child focuses its attention on campaigns against consumerism, Capitalism,, war, poverty, globalization, environmental destruction, and other issues it sees as negatively affecting our societies and the world as a whole. Very often themed, each new issue challenges the intent of mass media and tests the limits of social thoughts, ideas, and opinions through a wide selection of contents and presentations.

Although cutting edge in its educated, liberalistic, and extreme leftist themes, I think the genius of Adbusters lies more in how the material is presented than the actual subject matter itself. Feature articles and mock advertisements are presented creatively through the use of stylized layouts, design work, photography, and non-linear writing styles. The magazine forces itself upon the reader with an aesthetic that's as intriguing as it is disturbing by using art and creative writing to question all aspects of life that have come to be accepted as "norm". You could very easily categorize Adbusters as an art magazine. Its a product that achieves an end result that all the aspects of quality art should achieve. It makes you think.

In recent years the magazine has come under fire for having a similar style and using the same techniques it rallies against to help push their own agendas and ideas, but its that very cynicism and contradictory attitude that attracts me to each new issue month after month. Theres a lot more goin on between the pages of its high gloss cover than meets the eye.

I have a lot of interests and its very hard for me to have a favorite "anything". But if you ever ask me what my favorite magazine is, Ill say Adbusters every time. High Praise. Check it out. - Brian James/ Dope Sick Radio

WHO CARES: THE DUANE PETERS STORY - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

Like it says in the intro, Duane Peters should be fuckin dead. And the fact that he's still standin is one of the biggest reasons hes become such a legend in the world of punkrock and skateboarding. Hes a survivor in the purest definition of the word. He doesnt stop. Hes never stopped. And he never will stop. Hes been there from the beginning and its arguable that hes the very reason punk rock and skateboarding ever became associated in the first place. Hes never played by any other rules than the ones hes set for himself and hes never known any other way of life.

The entertainment factor of WHO CARES is off the charts.  The story unfolds brilliantly through a goldmine worth of archived video footage intertwined with narration and interviews from the people who were there right alongside with him. This documentary is not only a definitive oral telling of the history and progression of skateboarding and punk rock, its the story of person whos always lived his life his own way no matter how twisted and fucked it got.

What make this doc so appealing is that the story itself is so universal. Whether you make it through life beaten, bruised, and broke; or alive, stronger, and smarter, the bottom line is that we all have our struggles and we all have to face our demons. And how you deal with your demons is what builds your character. In the case of Duane Peters, that motheruckers got more character than a Saturday morning cartoon. And hes got more charisma than a corner-store schizto preachin the end of the world scratched on an oil-stained piece-o-cardboard.

WHO CARES takes you on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows and at times its straight-up hard to fuckin watch. But in the end, I guarantee youll walk away feeling inspired and motivated and moved.

I cant tell you how many times Ive burned through this DVD and I still hit the pause bottom every time I leave the room to piss. I know whats comin next and I still dont wanna miss a thing.

2009 marks the 19th year of Converge's existence as a musical outfit. AXE TO FALL is the bands 7th official full-length release. This record is more punk than any punk record released this year. This record is harder-core than any other hardcore record release this year. The same comparison applies to the metal genre.

This band has never compromised its sound or aggression for any kind of mainstream acceptance and yet they've managed to achieve it in almost every subgenre and branch-off of it.

I cant even think straight right now. My senses are shredded. My nerves are frayed. I just had a panic attack and reverted back to some kind of primitive, animalistic way of thinking. God bless you Jake Bannon...you sick, scrawny tattooed motherfucker. Yer somethin different. Theres no doubt about that.

DEAR LANDLORD: DREAM HOMES REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

I've read reviews that categorize DEAR LANDLORD as a pop punk band. And since I tend to shy way from most bands that fall into that category, I'm gonna refrain from labeling this band at all. What Ill do instead is paint a little picture. Imagine yourself being kicked in the stomach by an ex-girlfriend. You drop to the ground. And as your lying there curled up in a fetal position, she kneels down besides you. She tells you how sorry she is for doing what she just did. She caresses your face and wipes the beads of sweat off your forehead. As she leans in to offer what you expect to be a kiss, she head butts you straight in the fuckin nose. As you choke on the blood that pours down the back of your throat you can see out the corner of your eye, the image of a woman laughing. You close your eyes and when you wake up you realize that it was nothing more than a fucked up dream. Those are the exact moods this record accomplishes to evoke. A roller coaster ride of emotion throughout it's entirety.

On a more tangible note, DEAR LANDLORD definitely has that Midwest, sing-a-long, punkrock sound. Its a sound thats hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it. Whether theyve inherited that style intentionally or subconsciously is an answer the world may never come to know. What the world just might come to know however, is that DEAR LANDLORD is band with substance. Every song on this record is a pseudo-anthem filled with empowering and empathetic subject matter; accompanied by a complimentary selection of chorus lines, breakdown, and r-r-r-riffs.

The band is comprised of two-parts RIVETHEAD and two-parts COPYRIGHT. The first band being based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the latter hailing out of Carbondale, Illinois. Thus, that Midwest sound.

FAILURES is the latest musical offering from former Charles Bronson, Das Oath, and Holy Molar frontman Mark McCoy. If you're familiar with Mark's vocal style than you know what to expect. If youre unfamiliar than you better be wearin a fuckin diaper. This record is relentless. It never slows down and it never fuckin stops. Its a straight punch to the fuckin teeth and it accomplishes that through an aesthetic I cant quite put into words.

The band formed in the winter of 2006 on the East Coast after the conclusion of Das Oath and also features members Will Killingsworth of Orchid, Andrew Jackmauh, and Matt Wilga. KRUM BUMS: SAME OLD STORY REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

The snotty saga of Austin-based street punkers continues with the release of SAME OLD STORY out now on TKO Records. With the exception of a higher production value and the inclusion of a cello in the mix, this 6 song E.P. delivers exactly what you've come to expect from this multi-ethnic, beer-spittin' collection of gritty musicians.

Frontman Dave Rodriquez's throaty vocal style brings to life the angst-ridden content of his words and combined with the musicianship of the band; the Krum Bums as a collective manage to re-create that sonic vacuum of punkrock paranoia, frustration, and hatred felt on prior releases such as THE SOUND and AS THE TIDE TURNS.

As serious as the music of the Krum Bums is, what I admire most about the band is their brutally sarcastic and comedic approach to life offstage. Their sense of humor is in glaring contrast to the serious and moody nature of music they write. When I asked Dave Rodriquez in a recent interview about the importance of having that vibrant sense of humor to combat the darkness of the times we live in, his response put everything into perspective.

"Having that sense of humor is probably the only way I could survive - with all the fucked up shit goin on (in the world today) - and just dealing with life in general - sometimes with all the drama you just gotta sit down and have a drink and have some fuckin laughs."

CHE: PART ONE/ PART TWO - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

I just finished watching Steven Soderbergh's four-hour biopic Che starring Benicio Del Toro and Ive been inspired to write a review. The movie is currently in theatres in very limited release but if you have On Demand you can purchase it from the Sundance Channel. The film was originally set up to be released as two separate films. The first half being called The Argentine and the second half being called Guerilla. The two final versions have been combined as one and are being shown in theatres with a half-hour intermission under the single title Che. If you purchase it from On Demand you will have to pay separately for both halves of the movie.

The first half of the film is based on Ches published diaries Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War and covers the period from 1955 through 1959. Its also intercut with scenes from his visit to the United Nations in New York in 1964 where he spoke on behalf and acted as diplomat for the Cuban people. Most of the first half takes place in the jungles as Che and his guerillas make there way through Cuba to Havana securing city after city.

The second half of the film focuses on Ches time spent in Bolivia and is based off his unfinished diaries officially published as The Bolivian Diary. This second half of the film focuses on the periods from 1965 through his assassination in Bolivia in 1967. Like the first half, a majority of the second half takes place in the jungles. The scenery is broken up with interactions in the Bolivian villages and scenes involving the Bolivian government discussing what to do about Ches activities in the country.

There is no mention of Ches history or early years in either of the two halves. The movie strictly covers the time he spent as a guerilla fighter during and after the Cuban Revolution. In order to understand why Che is doing was he is doing its important to understand his history. I recommend reading the books and watching the documentaries but if you just want to keep it cinematic then check out Walter Salless 2004 movie The Motorcycle Diaries. The Motorcycle Diaries. might as well be the considered the official prequel to Che. It covers his early years as young doctor traveling through Central America and gives light into how and why he became who he became.

Benicio Del Toro is the best thing about this film. No other actor could have done the part justice and the fact that they cast an actor of Latin-American decent makes the performance that much more authentic. 85% of the film is in Spanish with English subtitles also making the movie as authentic possible.

Ive been anticipating the release of this movie since I first heard about its production two years ago. I am an admirer of Che Guevera. He encouraged education. He was a doctor. A teacher. A writer. An avid reader. A diplomat. A humanitarian. And most importantly, he wasnt afraid to fight and die for the causes he believed in. His story is controversial. He participated in assassinations and has been called a murderer. He studied the ideas of Karl Marx and has been officially marked as a communist. But he cared. He cared for the people being taken advantage by their governments. He fought to make life better for the forgotten. He promoted the building of schools and hospitals in lands that had none. He encouraged the beaten and broken to stand up and fight to be heard. He inspired the workers to strike. And he encouraged hope and possibility.

In closing, this is a movie that needed to be made and its a movie that should be watched.
