ALL PIGS MUST DIE is the anit-supergroup featuring members of Converge, Bloodhorse, and The Hope Conspiracy. A self-supporting side- project hailing out of Boston, Mass by a quartet of musicians already well established in the genre of extreme music. GOD IS WAR is the bands first official full-length and the much anticipated follow up to their 2010 self-titled EP released on DEATHWISH. God Is War is available on SOUTHERN LORD RECORDS.

This is not a happy record. Hope Con singer and songwriter Kevin Baker describes the lyrical direction of APMD as being “much more focused on man’s inhumanity towards man, and the idea of mankind devouring itself and destroying everything around it, the environment, the world”. His frustration can be felt and heard in his delivery on songs like THIRD WORLD GENOCIDE and DEATH DEALER.

The title of the album comes from the book BLOOD MERIDIAN by American author Cormack McCarthy. “One of the characters in the book, the Judge, who represents humanity’s darker side, talks about how war is God, so we flipped it around. We thought it really worked well with our concept behind this band.”

This record is hard. A fierce, relentless onslaught of sonic schizophrenia. Unforgiving and unapologetic. The drumming of Ben Koller is always a treat. His style stands alone. He’s more than just a beat man and he hits the drums as if he's challenging his bandmates to keep up. He’s notorious for his spastic outbursts - as if nodding out in the middle of a song with the speed set on blast.

The record was recorded and produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou at Godcity [Studios] where he brilliantly captured the gloom and frustration the band sought out to convey. The output is thick and metallic. Like sucking on a penny in a steam bath. Adam Wentworth's guitar work is dark and melodic. His repeated use of the single high notes on intros and before chorus breaks create a frantic mood of impending psychosis. Downright disturbing at points.

Well deserved credit for the artwork on both records goes to Florian Bertmer, an established German Illustrator renowned for his work in the hardcore, grindcore, and metal scenes. His artwork can be seen on releases for Converge, Napalm Death, and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

NOFX: HARDCORE – REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

What do you do when yer shitty little punk bands’ been around for 28 years, recorded 11 full-length studio albums, 15 EP’s, a countless number of 7-inches, and sold over 6 million of those records worldwide? You pretty much do whatever the fuck you want. NOFX has never signed to a major label. They tour wherever and whenever they want. They rarely do interviews. Their sound has been copied a million times over by a million forgotten bands. And I still can’t figure out if Fat Mike is a drug addict or not.

Coming off the anti-success of their limited split 7-inch with The Spits, NOFX’s latest nugget is a 9 song EP simply and appropriately titled HARDCORE for its collection of 80’s hardcore tracks covering 80’s hardcore bands. The EP is a blistering, sloppy mess worthy of review for the respects is pays to the good ol days of punk and hardcore.

The EP tops off at less than 8 minutes and burns through a fury of screaming chorus lines like “I’ll kick you in your fuckin face” and “Police Brutality”. The production value has been slightly downgraded for a vintage aesthetic and the album was originally intended to be released with no title, no artwork, and no track listing.

The dirty little secret of disenchanted purists and anarcho punx across the globe, NOFX has as many haters as it does fans. That’s bound to happen when you’re the only punk bands around who can put out a release like this and still rake in the cash. Ya can’t hate em for that can ya?

Lenny Bruce was an entertainer far too ahead of his time. He rose from the underground and became a pioneer for free speech and social satire. He challenged his audience and authority alike and faced great consequence as a result. His public commentary on war, politics, corruption, race issues, and sex rubbed all the wrong people in all the wrong ways. He was arrested on obscenity charges in practically every major city across America. It can be stated that Lenny Bruce pushed the boundaries of spoken word to the limits of the law. By the end of his career he couldn’t book a gig.

Lenny Bruce was a truth-seeker who built a career breaking down walls of multi-layered facades. He was haunted by the fact that the establishment had silenced him and spent the last years of his life trying to clear his name of the reputation that he was nothing more than a filthy comic. His last wishes would never fully be realized. His years of struggles with drug addiction would take his life in 1968 at the age of 40.

This is the Dope Sick Radio way of paying respects to an influential entertainer whose life and career were cut far too short. This is Lenny Bruce Episode. Enjoy.

DEAD SWANS: SLEEPWALKERS - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

Perhaps I’m a little late jumpin on this wagon. But the wheels have yet to fall off and the dust has yet to settle. DEAD SWANS is a group of five English chaps from the Brighton area of the UK. They formed in 2006 and self-released three EP’s prior to signing with BRIDGE NINE RECORDS in 2009. In August of 2009, the band released their debut full-length SLEEPWALKERS. There are plenty of reviews in circulation of this record but very few of them seem to realize the full capacity of the release.

The songs that make up Sleepwalkers are revealing and frustrated. Vocalist Nick Worthington delivers his words in agonizing fashion. Upon further examination of the lyrical content, his words prove more agonizing than the delivery. The music that compliments Worthington’s presence is furious and volatile. The drum tracks are thunderous and the guitars are spread smoothly over the treacherous terrain.

To dismiss Dead Swans as just another angry offshoot of an already over-saturated genre would be a disservice to the moods and emotions this band puts forth. The band has been part of a number of impressive tours from the very beginning supporting such acts as Comeback Kid, Ruiner, Blacklisted, and Integrity proving their genuine worth in an international hardcore community.

Rumors of a new release have been in circulation but the band has remained mysteriously quite since the release of Sleepwalkers, creating a silent anticipation for any future releases. The fans are waiting.

On television, in newspapers, on the internet, in movies, in video games, in magazines, billboard after billboard just driving down the street. Whether to serve the purpose of advertising or simply used to decorate the landscape, we are unaware of how strongly these images affect and shape our views of each other and ourselves. These images appear in our dreams at night and subconsciously influence what we buy, what we believe, and how we act. It can be overwhelming. So we just shut down and take it all in. We absorb it and it becomes part of us.

MEDIA CONTROL is a new visual project by Dope Sick Radio creator Brian James Bush. Very simple in nature. A social statement made up historical and contemporary images of the outlaw nature. Some soft. Some hard. Representing a culture bombarded by information and imagery. Stunning and desensitizing. A society as beautiful as it is ugly. Violent and sensitive. Constantly changing and ever-evolving. Captured forever and only...in a still image.

MORE THAN LIFE: LOVE LET ME GO – REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

Despite the many different genres and factions, hardcore has always been a style of music bred from emotion. Whether personal, political, social, or abstract, the music has always been executed with a primal sort of visceral instinct.

Every few years a band comes around that is able to capture more specific areas of feeling than others. One such band is the South West UK’s MORE THAN LIFE. Emerging onto the scene in 2007 with their self-produced EP aptly titled PRELUADE, More Than Life began carving out a style of music as furious as their passion to be heard. The band exhibits such a frantic style of instrumental onslaught that one will be amazed how they manage to tie it all back together just before the train wrecks.

Their latest release LOVE LET ME GO out on ANCHORS AWEIGH RECORDS finds the band completely primed for international admiration. The record as a whole evokes an experience of Greek tragedy in audio form, violent and catastrophic. Rising and falling, building steam and crashing to a halt. The vocal delivery is an agonizing compliment to the lyrical content of heartbreak and loss.

It’s hard to say why certain bands shine above others. There are many factors involved. If you were to base it solely on the music alone, which is not always the deciding factor of a bands success, More Than Life is a band to float to the top.

Adbusters Magazine is a product of Adbusters Media Foundation, a non-for-profit, anti-consumerist organization founded in 1989 by Kalle Lasn and Bill Schmalz. Created and based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the foundation describes itself as "a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators, and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age.

The organization and its bi-monthly print child focuses its attention on campaigns against consumerism, Capitalism,, war, poverty, globalization, environmental destruction, and other issues it sees as negatively affecting our societies and the world as a whole. Very often themed, each new issue challenges the intent of mass media and tests the limits of social thoughts, ideas, and opinions through a wide selection of contents and presentations.

Although cutting edge in its educated, liberalistic, and extreme leftist themes, I think the genius of Adbusters lies more in how the material is presented than the actual subject matter itself. Feature articles and mock advertisements are presented creatively through the use of stylized layouts, design work, photography, and non-linear writing styles. The magazine forces itself upon the reader with an aesthetic that's as intriguing as it is disturbing by using art and creative writing to question all aspects of life that have come to be accepted as "norm". You could very easily categorize Adbusters as an art magazine. Its a product that achieves an end result that all the aspects of quality art should achieve. It makes you think.

In recent years the magazine has come under fire for having a similar style and using the same techniques it rallies against to help push their own agendas and ideas, but its that very cynicism and contradictory attitude that attracts me to each new issue month after month. Theres a lot more goin on between the pages of its high gloss cover than meets the eye.

I have a lot of interests and its very hard for me to have a favorite "anything". But if you ever ask me what my favorite magazine is, Ill say Adbusters every time. High Praise. Check it out. - Brian James/ Dope Sick Radio

Like it says in the intro, Duane Peters should be fuckin dead. And the fact that he's still standin is one of the biggest reasons hes become such a legend in the world of punkrock and skateboarding. Hes a survivor in the purest definition of the word. He doesnt stop. Hes never stopped. And he never will stop. Hes been there from the beginning and its arguable that hes the very reason punk rock and skateboarding ever became associated in the first place. Hes never played by any other rules than the ones hes set for himself and hes never known any other way of life.

The entertainment factor of WHO CARES is off the charts. The story unfolds brilliantly through a goldmine worth of archived video footage intertwined with narration and interviews from the people who were there right alongside with him. This documentary is not only a definitive oral telling of the history and progression of skateboarding and punk rock, its the story of person whos always lived his life his own way no matter how twisted and fucked it got.

What make this doc so appealing is that the story itself is so universal. Whether you make it through life beaten, bruised, and broke; or alive, stronger, and smarter, the bottom line is that we all have our struggles and we all have to face our demons. And how you deal with your demons is what builds your character. In the case of Duane Peters, that motheruckers got more character than a Saturday morning cartoon. And hes got more charisma than a corner-store schizto preachin the end of the world scratched on an oil-stained piece-o-cardboard.

WHO CARES takes you on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows and at times its straight-up hard to fuckin watch. But in the end, I guarantee youll walk away feeling inspired and motivated and moved.

I cant tell you how many times Ive burned through this DVD and I still hit the pause bottom every time I leave the room to piss. I know whats comin next and I still dont wanna miss a thing.

2009 marks the 19th year of Converge's existence as a musical outfit. AXE TO FALL is the bands 7th official full-length release. This record is more punk than any punk record released this year. This record is harder-core than any other hardcore record release this year. The same comparison applies to the metal genre.

This band has never compromised its sound or aggression for any kind of mainstream acceptance and yet they've managed to achieve it in almost every subgenre and branch-off of it.

I've read reviews that categorize DEAR LANDLORD as a pop punk band. And since I tend to shy way from most bands that fall into that category, I'm gonna refrain from labeling this band at all. What Ill do instead is paint a little picture. Imagine yourself being kicked in the stomach by an ex-girlfriend. You drop to the ground. And as your lying there curled up in a fetal position, she kneels down besides you. She tells you how sorry she is for doing what she just did. She caresses your face and wipes the beads of sweat off your forehead. As she leans in to offer what you expect to be a kiss, she head butts you straight in the fuckin nose. As you choke on the blood that pours down the back of your throat you can see out the corner of your eye, the image of a woman laughing. You close your eyes and when you wake up you realize that it was nothing more than a fucked up dream. Those are the exact moods this record accomplishes to evoke. A roller coaster ride of emotion throughout it's entirety.

On a more tangible note, DEAR LANDLORD definitely has that Midwest, sing-a-long, punkrock sound. Its a sound thats hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it. Whether theyve inherited that style intentionally or subconsciously is an answer the world may never come to know. What the world just might come to know however, is that DEAR LANDLORD is band with substance. Every song on this record is a pseudo-anthem filled with empowering and empathetic subject matter; accompanied by a complimentary selection of chorus lines, breakdown, and r-r-r-riffs.

The band is comprised of two-parts RIVETHEAD and two-parts COPYRIGHT. The first band being based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the latter hailing out of Carbondale, Illinois. Thus, that Midwest sound.

DREAM HOMES is the bands first full-length release and if they can keep their bond together long enough to write another record, Dear Landlord just might find themselves under a microscope of mainstream acceptance. The snotty saga of Austin-based street punkers continues with the release of SAME OLD STORY out now on TKO Records. With the exception of a higher production value and the inclusion of a cello in the mix, this 6 song E.P. delivers exactly what you've come to expect from this multi-ethnic, beer-spittin' collection of gritty musicians.

Frontman Dave Rodriquez's throaty vocal style brings to life the angst-ridden content of his words and combined with the musicianship of the band; the Krum Bums as a collective manage to re-create that sonic vacuum of punkrock paranoia, frustration, and hatred felt on prior releases such as THE SOUND and AS THE TIDE TURNS.

As serious as the music of the Krum Bums is, what I admire most about the band is their brutally sarcastic and comedic approach to life offstage. CHE: PART ONE/ PART TWO - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

I just finished watching Steven Soderbergh's four-hour biopic Che starring Benicio Del Toro and Ive been inspired to write a review. The movie is currently in theatres in very limited release but if you have On Demand you can purchase it from the Sundance Channel. The film was originally set up to be released as two separate films. The first half being called The Argentine and the second half being called Guerilla. The two final versions have been combined as one and are being shown in theatres with a half-hour intermission under the single title Che. If you purchase it from On Demand you will have to pay separately for both halves of the movie.

The first half of the film is based on Ches published diaries Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War and covers the period from 1955 through 1959. Its also intercut with scenes from his visit to the United Nations in New York in 1964 where he spoke on behalf and acted as diplomat for the Cuban people. Most of the first half takes place in the jungles as Che and his guerillas make there way through Cuba to Havana securing city after city.

The second half of the film focuses on Ches time spent in Bolivia and is based off his unfinished diaries officially published as The Bolivian Diary. This second half of the film focuses on the periods from 1965 through his assassination in Bolivia in 1967. Like the first half, a majority of the second half takes place in the jungles. The scenery is broken up with interactions in the Bolivian villages and scenes involving the Bolivian government discussing what to do about Ches activities in the country.

There is no mention of Ches history or early years in either of the two halves. The movie strictly covers the time he spent as a guerilla fighter during and after the Cuban Revolution. In order to understand why Che is doing was he is doing its important to understand his history. I recommend reading the books and watching the documentaries but if you just want to keep it cinematic then check out Walter Salless 2004 movie The Motorcycle Diaries. The Motorcycle Diaries. might as well be the considered the official prequel to Che. It covers his early years as young doctor traveling through Central America and gives light into how and why he became who he became.

Benicio Del Toro is the best thing about this film. No other actor could have done the part justice and the fact that they cast an actor of Latin-American decent makes the performance that much more authentic. 85% of the film is in Spanish with English subtitles also making the movie as authentic possible.

Ive been anticipating the release of this movie since I first heard about its production two years ago. I am an admirer of Che Guevera. He encouraged education. He was a doctor. A teacher. A writer. An avid reader. A diplomat. A humanitarian. And most importantly, he wasnt afraid to fight and die for the causes he believed in. His story is controversial. He participated in assassinations and has been called a murderer. He studied the ideas of Karl Marx and has been officially marked as a communist. But he cared. He cared for the people being taken advantage by their governments. He fought to make life better for the forgotten. He promoted the building of schools and hospitals in lands that had none. He encouraged the beaten and broken to stand up and fight to be heard. He inspired the workers to strike. And he encouraged hope and possibility.

In closing, this is a movie that needed to be made and its a movie that should be watched.

"When your parents begin to like your work, thats when you know its getting bad." - Charles Bukowski

Charles Henry Bukowski is single-handedly responsible for releasing poetry from the clutches of the academes. He brought poetry back to the streets in a way that the Beats only wished they could. His work has spawned generations of copycats and to this day, no writer has been able to take his place.

Whether writing a semi-autobiographical novel about his tortured childhood, or compiling hundreds of poems about the complexity of the male/ female relation, Bukowski wrote from the heart. He wrote what he knew about and he wrote about the life he was given and the life he lived. And it was never pretty. His work was as ugly as the man himself. First impression were bad with him. "He didnt wear clothes well."

Bukowski was king of the skid row poets. He drank with as much passion as he wrote. And he fucked enough ugly women to make Bill Clinton jealous.

He had an absolute hatred for rules and regulations that can be seen everywhere throughout his work. He despised traditionally structured poetry and had no time for metaphors. He wrote it like he saw it and in the 74 years of his life, he managed to vomit more words onto a page than Michael Jackson fingered little boy butthole.

Bukowski credits his German-born father as being his single most influence as a writer. Beaten on a daily basis with a razor decorated belt, he considered the abuse as the perfect literary training. "When you get the shit kicked out of you everyday, you tend to say what you want."

Born Into This is the definitive Bukowski documentary. It features dozens of rare footage with not only Bukowski himself, but his family, friends, loved-ones, and admirers. Like most documentaries, this story is told through archived video footage, photographs, and interviews from the people who stood beside him throughout his so-called career. Fuckin A! This is another one I can watch a hundred times and never get sick of. Highly recommended - but only as a companion piece. READ HIS BOOKS!

RANCID: LET THE DOMINOES FALL - REVIEW BY BRIAN JAMES

I walked away from "DOMINOS" with the same first impression I've had of every new Rancid record to come before it. I hated it. And like every new Rancid record to come before it, I was eventually drawn back in. And with every fresh listen, I found myself falling so much in love with the new material that it eventually replaced everything else in my 6 disc CD exchange player.

This strange and inexplicable pattern of initial un-acceptance for new Rancid records goes back to 1994's LETS GO. Perhaps I'm just hesitant to accept new material from a band whose past material has already become such an important part to the soundtrack of my life. Perhaps I dive into the first listen with a pre-conceived notion that there's no way the new record can top the last. Or maybe I'm just jealous because they create the music, and I'm just the douche bag writing the fuckin review. Whatever the case may be, it's impossible for me to deny the passion of the music and the genius and talent of the members that make up this band.

Strangely enough though, for the first time in 15 years I actually have a tangible reason to doubt the sincerity of a new Rancid release. This ain't the same Rancid the world has always known. Founding member Brett Read, and the only drummer Rancid has ever known, left the band in 2006 citing "personal reasons" and has been replaced by former USED drummer Brandon Steineckert. The long-lasting and original line-up is no longer. It's a huge change and a hard pill for die-hard fans to swallow. But with that being said, the core of Rancid is still made up of Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, and Matt Freeman. And although I hate to say it, Brandon Steineckert does a fine job of keeping the drumming style of Brett Reed alive.

The bottom line is that despite the ever-evolving musical styles on each and every Rancid release, the sound remains the same and the material on "DOMINOS" is equally as relevant as the material on any record to come before it. It's fuckin Rancid man! Shit.

I wanna talk about Social Class and Misappropriation of Wealth for a minute here. There is absolutely NO fucking reason why one person in this country is taking in 2 Billion Dollars a year and millions of people are earning less than $20,000 a year. I don't give a FUCK what good or service that person is providing in this country or for this country.

With the exception of individuals taking advantage of the welfare state, the lower classes are working just as hard as the bloated, rich upper 10%, if not harder. You don't see corporate execs working 3 jobs to feed his loved ones do you? I sure as fuck don't. What I see are criminals in over-priced suits and ties sitting behind desks with shit-eating grins on their faces reaping the benefits of the working class.

The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, and the middle class is being smashed to pieces. The oil prices are criminal, the sick are being raped by the Health Care System, and people are being starved by the skyrocketing food prices. The sales tax in Chicago is now the highest in any city throughout the nation at 10.5%. The answer is NOT tax adjustments. THE ANSWER IS PROFIT ADJUSTMENT.

Capitalism needs to reformed and restructured and if that means incorporating Socialistic theories and ideals then that's what needs to be done. Social Status is not a race, a sex, or a cultural issue. It's a greed issue. I'm talking about restructuring profit margins for the citizens of this country. Capitalism was a great idea for the formation of this country. It worked in the beginning. INTERVIEW W/ JAKE BANNON OF CONVERGE - BY BRIAN JAMES FOR LAYERS MAG

The following interview was conducted late 2004 at the old Bottom Lounge in Chicago. It was the first time I experienced the onslaught of CONVERGE live and I haven't experienced anything like it since.

This is by no means the "definitive" Jake Bannon interview but it should provide a little historic insight into what was goin on in his head at the time of writing, recording, and touring out what I consider to be the greatest Converge record to date - YOU FAIL ME.

This interview appeared as the ninth in the series of the Layers Magazine Pocket Books.

BRIAN JAMES: What was your state of mind during the writing and recording of the new record (YOU FAIL ME)?

JACOB BANNON: I was at a point in my life where I was battling my depression and really trying to get to the core of what my personal anger and issues were. After we did the last record (JANE DOE) I thought I had come to peace with most of the stuff I was going through and I hadn't. I realized that I had a lot of issues that were still un-addresses and alot deeper and that I thought and so I just continued the process of working on them. I took a good hard look at the people around me. I looked at the failures in my life and the failure in my friends and loved ones and I tried to take responsibility for what I could in order to start healing and start becoming a better person.

BJ: How do you deal with all the common pressures of life?

JACOB: This whole punk and hardcore community and what we do is all about survival and thats what we do. We just survive.

BJ: Where'd you grow up and what was your childhood like?

JACOB: I went to middle school and highschool in Andover, Massachusetts. Its a little suburb about a 1/2 hour from Boston. And I spent my weekends in East Boston with my father. My childhood was a typical lower middle class childhood complete with all the hardships of divorce, family life, and other issues that we all face in some form or another.

BJ: Talk a little about your art and print work.

JACOB: I do a lot of design work. It's basically what I do for a day job. It's what I do to pay my rent. I do a lot of design work for independent labels and clients and bands and I just try to create interesting art for people who want and need it.

BJ: What's the process of writing a song in Converge?

JACOB: It's always different. Sometimes someone will bring a song to the table musically and we'll define it individually from that point on and then come together with what we've got. Other times we work on stuff collectively as a band and share the process completely from beginning to end.

BJ: What role, if any, do social issues or politics play in your work both musically and artistically?

JACOB: I try not to involve political issues in anything that I do. I have more personal demons that I've got to face in life than worrying about politics. I think that everyone should be hyper aware of what's goin on around them but we just don't use Converge as an outlet for political expression.

BJ: Talk a little bit about Supermachiner.

JACOB: Supermachiner was a project I did for a few years. They were songs I wrote between 1994 and 1998 and at the time that stuff was fairly "avant garde" and it was really hard to get people to be able to play and do that kind of music. It took a lot of musical growth to be able to put it together. It took a while and I had some time off from Converge and I managed to get into the studio with all those old four-track demos and we re-recorded some stuff and and we just put the thing together.

BJ: How did Deathwish Inc. come to be?

JACOB: We just wanted to create a label that was ethically responsible and that promoted quality music. That was our goal pure and simple.

BJ: Talk about Dear Lover.

JACOB: Much like Supermachiner, Dear Lover is also my solo project. But it's more refined and with the invention of programs like Protools it's a lot easier to create a more polished, final product.

BJ: When can we expect a release of some of that Dear Lover material?

JACOB: Hopefully by the middle of 2005.

BJ: Is there anything in life that you haven't yet accomplished that you still plan on doing?

JACOB: I just want to continue with a forward movement. I don't look back on anything and I've never set out to accomplish anything. I just wanna play music and create art and have a positive impact doing it.

BJ: What kind of legacy would you like to leave if any at all?

JACOB: No legacy. I'm not interested. All I'm interested in is being relevant to myself and others and creating heartfelt material.

BJ: Are you familiar with the BOSTON BEATDOWN DVD's and what's your opinion about the material contained on it?

JACOB: Alot of those kids are my friends that I've grown up with who are involved with that stuff and I think that maybe it's a bit extreme...

BJ: ...I just watched it so it's fresh in my head. Do you think that it portrays the hardcore scene in a negative light?

JACOB: I don't think that it's a negative thing. Friendship and community is not a negative thing. But what I think happens when you see a video like that is that people who don't know anything about the scene think those friendships and those bands are all built around violence and there's alot more to it than that. Just like any aspect of this community, kids go to shows for a variety of reasons, but more often than not, those kids call this community their homes because a lot of them feel like they have nothing else in life. They hold their scene very dearly and very close to their hearts. I also find it really ironic that that kind of behavior and activity is "championed" and/ or condoned in other more mainstream cultures and the media has the nerve to condemn and criticize it in ours. A kid can listen to an EMINEM record or a DMX record that blatantly promotes violence and it's totally accepted. It's just a part of life. And I'm not condoning it but I do understand it and I understand the history and the culture and the reasons why it exists.

Indiana-based Punk N Beans Radio has embraced the niche-friendliness of Internet radio, bringing listeners a handful of punk-related shows every week as podcasts. Chicago’s Brian Bush, host of the station’s Dope Sick Radio show, initially started it as an extension of his now defunct magazine, Layers. Carrying Layers' coverage of punk rock, politics, and off-the-wall interviews to the web, Bush celebrated his first year of successful shows last month. With a few hundred loyal weekly listeners in his pocket, Bush discussed some of his most uncomfortable interview moments—fitting for a show that doesn’t shy away from ex-cons and porn stars—and explains how he turned the tables on the subjects. Dope Sick Radio airs Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. on punkandbeansradio.com.

Subject: Justin Pearson, bassist and vocalist for San Diego-based grindcore band The Locust

Why it was uncomfortable: Pearson related, in graphic detail, a story about The Locust bombing while opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Europe—involving vomit and a pint glass. "Someone had hit the drummer of The Locust with this pint glass," Bush says, "which he then puked into and dumped over his own head instead of throwing back into the crowd—which he threatened to do—of little girls that were just there to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I was so grossed out. I forgot my next question."

Escape plan: "I've never really been at a loss for words during an interview before this," Bush explains. It took Pearson's initiative and interview experience to get back on track after a 45-second bout of every radio host's worst nightmare: dead air.

Lesson learned: "Don't approach an interview on a full stomach."

An unnamed former Gangster Disciple, fresh out of jail and on probation after a 10-year murder sentence. Also, an old family friend.

Why it was uncomfortable: Keeping in mind his journalistic duties, Bush decided to probe with hard questions before his subject changed his mind about the interview. "I was asking him about gang-banging and murdering people," he says. "He told me that the murder was drug-related, and that he shot the victim in the back."

Escape plan: Bush pushed through it. "He got more and more squirrely as the interview went on, but I just said 'Fuck it,' and kept going. He told me that 75 percent of the drugs that make it into prison came in through the guards, and afterward had this look like, 'Maybe I shouldn't be talking about this!'"

Lesson learned: "Even if you get your ass kicked or a hit put out on you, at least you got the story."

Why it was uncomfortable: Speaking to a former member of a cult most infamous for adult-on-child sexual abuse is difficult enough, but discussing Kelley's friend Ricky Rodriguez was especially nerve-wracking. "He tried to track down and kill his mom in 2005 after he left 'The Family' in 2001, but failed to get in touch with her. Instead, he killed another Family member—a close friend of his mother's—and then committed suicide."

Escape plan: Bush had to be on his toes. "There were a couple of times where I'd ask her a question about some of her tougher life experiences, like drug addiction and Ricky, and she'd start to cry; I had to move on, quickly."

Lesson learned: "No matter the off-the-wall nature of your subject, always approach them with the utmost sensitivity and respect."

Why it was uncomfortable: Aside from having starred in one of the first porn films he saw, Bush elaborates, "She turned the tables on me and started asking me about my sex life. We covered everything from anal sex to squirting, and as raunchy as I like to be on my show, I found myself blushing."

Escape plan: "I tried not to name partners, because the last thing I need is an ex calling me all pissed off."
